We will begin a unit in physical science. We will work with chapters on matter, forces, and energy. A little bit of science in the toy box will come back this year. Making toys and investigating the hows and whys are STEM geared.
The children have done a lovely job with their prayers for Mass. Thank you for the extra practice at home. It sure helps with the confidence level. We talk about the prayers together as a class.
In math we are still working on our double facts, counting on 1,2, and 3, number families, zero facts, and 10s + 1. We are using flashcards, doing brain chores, and playing games to help reinforce these facts. The last part of November we studied shapes, solids, sides, faces, etc. We will continue with patterning, graphing, and center work. Math can really be fun. Every Friday we set aside a time for FRIDAY FACT FLUENCY.
Religion studies will cover the Epiphany. We have had a nativity in our classroom and the Wise Men are now with the Holy Family. Christmas in the first grade will last a tiny bit longer.
In phonics we are reviewing short vowels and we’ll work on the long vowel sounds and spellings. This will introduce rules such as: “two vowels go a walking, the first one does the talking” and “the magic e or silent e.” We still use creative spelling in our room as this starts the process of accuracy.
Please continue the one-minute practice with nonsense words,
Thank you for your timely return of the baggy books. Goodness, we are busy!
Happy New Year!
Center time, Superkids Reading, and centers make for a strong independent learning environment.
We have Reading Buddy time with 5th grade.
** Please help your child learn to
tie shoes. A little practice every day sure makes a difference.**
Dibels! One minute practice every day!
Please return in a day.
Math homework will have the word DO. If you don't see the word DO it is not considered homework. :)
*Practice telling time~
1:00 and 1:30 on analog and digital clocks.
* Practice coin recognition and value...
Counting change to 50 cents is great grade level 21st century skill building!
Each day your first grader is responsible to complete each component of the DAILY FIVE. We achieve this in our guided reading, brain chores, center work, and independent learning.
Our class mission states that we want to be kind leaders! We are on our way!
