Science in first grade will conclude our space and technology unit and dig a bit deeper into gardening and life science.
Social studies covers needs and wants. Our unit on economics will help us learn more about working. We will talk about savings and volunteering.
In math we are working on addition and subtraction facts to 18. Bar graphs are currently being studied. We will still work on money, time, and calendar facts! Fractions and two digit addition is coming up! We are ready!!!
We will enjoy student reading at this time of year. When a child has a short book that he/she would like to read to the class they prepare by practicing the book and then they share their book with us. It is nice for us to sit and listen to others read. It is also very relaxing.
Always is the word we use when talking about God’s love. He will always love and care for us. He has always been with us and will always be with us. This is the covenant he made with us. We’ve been discussing this covenant in religion. We told stories about God’s love from the Old Testament. These stories and others in the Bible emphasize that God wants us to be happy with him forever in heaven. The Beatitudes teach us the attitudes of those who belong to God’s kingdom. By living the Beatitudes, we begin to experience the true happiness of God’s kingdom, which will come in its fullness at the end of time.
We are also learning that the Holy Spirit acts in each sacrament to bring us new life in God. We are learning how the sacraments celebrate God’s love.
This is a wonderful time of year! May God bless you as we bring our studies this year to a close. May you continue to walk in faith.
Mrs. Weishaar and her first graders
The 10 spelling words will go home at the end of each unit. If the unit ends on a Wednesday we will have a test on Wednesday. It will seem a bit strange at first but we are working on word patterns and memory words. We are learning spelling strategies and how to take spelling tests. By second grade your first grader will have a more solid base for grade level spelling tests. The words will be the same for all reading levels. Some words will be much more difficult and some words will be repeated. We'll have dictation almost every day and a spelling practice center will be set up in our room.
** Please help your child learn to
tie shoes. A little practice every day sure makes a difference.**
Dibels! One minute practice every day!
Please return in a day.
Math homework will have the word DO. If you don't see the word DO it is not considered homework. :)
*Practice telling time~
1:00 and 1:30 on analog and digital clocks.
* Practice coin recognition and value...
Counting change to 50 cents is great grade level 21st century skill building!
Each day your first grader is responsible to complete each component of the DAILY FIVE. We achieve this in our guided reading, brain chores, center work, and independent learning.
