Spelling words are coming home! Look for a rectangle slip of paper taken from our Superkids Workbook.
We will be having “news” almost every Friday. This is much like “show and tell.” I recommend educational items but anything your child finds important to tell us about is fine. Please remind him/her that it is risky to bring treasures. Things do get broken, lost, and dirty. Telling about an item is wonderful. The item can remain at home and we can still hear about the fun it offers.
Friday is also Slipper Friday. We wear our slippers and finish up the last hour of studies. We are usually working on Social Studies, Science, or Literature. Show and Tell will come first.
In reading we are doing some basic review of consonant sounds and vowel sounds. Word building, vocabulary recognition, comprehension, and language will be covered throughout each theme. We have practice books, phonetic readers, take home books, and student texts. We have phonics, language, and spelling tasks, as well. Please look through items sent home and ask your child about the day. Our Superkids Program is only 3 years old and has several tech options.
I’ll send home baggy books. These are skill-leveled books that reinforce decoding and basic sight words that we are using as first graders. I’ll send home two books each time. Please return the baggies, the book title and date sheet, and the two books the next morning. If you need an extra day that’s fine but get the books back SOON. We use these books in our reading program and need them. You’ll be seeing these books once a week and hopefully twice a week!
For math we will be working on number recognition, patterns, number ordering, and beginning place values. Number lines are being introduced. Some coin recognition and values (nickel is five cents and penny is one cent) are being touched upon, too. Problem solving will enter into the picture throughout the days. :-)
In science we are studying animals. We are learning so many facts! If your child has something to share about animals we have a science table just for those items. We are studying mammals, fish, birds, reptiles, and bugs! We also have a new science series and it looks wonderful!! I hope to have many science loving children in this class. STEM is coming into play as well!
We’ll make posters in religion. We have discussed that God made us and He made the earth. We are the caretakers of His creation. Our posters will cover topics about pollution, caring for animals, recycling, and conserving energy. God must be smiling on this first grade. They have good ideas!
This ought to be a wonderful year. I love this class already! Please feel free to call, email or write with concerns or questions.
Center time, Superkids Reading, and centers make for a strong independent learning environment.
We have Reading Buddy time with 5th grade.
** Please help your child learn to
tie shoes. A little practice every day sure makes a difference.**
Dibels! One minute practice every day!
Please return in a day.
Math homework will have the word DO. If you don't see the word DO it is not considered homework. :)
*Practice telling time~
1:00 and 1:30 on analog and digital clocks.
* Practice coin recognition and value...
Counting change to 50 cents is great grade level 21st century skill building!
Each day your first grader is responsible to complete each component of the DAILY FIVE. We achieve this in our guided reading, brain chores, center work, and independent learning.
Our class mission states that we want to be kind leaders! We are on our way!
