Ms. Fergesen-2nd Grade

Ms. Fergesen was born and raised in the town of Manchester, Iowa. She attended St. Mary's Catholic elementary school through 6th grade and graduated from West Delaware High School. Ms. Fergesen then went on to Luther College to pursue athletics and major in elementary education. She graduated from Luther College in Decorah, Iowa with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Elementary Education in 2008. Ms. Fergesen feels blessed to have St. Patrick School be her first teaching job. While Ms. Fergesen loves teaching 2nd grade at St. Pat's, she also loves staying active and being outdoors. Her many hobbies include bike riding, swimming, camping, fishing, horseback riding and kayaking. Ms. Fergesen loves being with family and friends most of all!

Language Arts: Reading- Theme 4- Imagine That! The students are current reading 3rd story in theme 4, Dear Mr. Blueberry. As the children read this story, they will learn that surprises can happen anywhere when one has an active imagination. Grammar- The students will be learning about common, proper and plural nouns. Spelling- Words with ue, ew, ui. This Week's Spelling List: 1. flew 2. blue 3. fruit 4. stew 5. grew 6. glue 7. suit 8. threw 9. new 10. drew Challenge Words 1. juice 2. true 3. crew 4. cue Today's Homework: Math: In math we are starting to learn about mental math in Topic 9. The students will regroup 1 ten for 10 ones when subtracting. Children will use models to subtract a one-digit number from a two-digit number with or without regrouping.Children will subtract a one-digit number from a two-digit number with and without regrouping using a standard algorithm.Children will use a standard subtraction algorithm to subtract a two-digit number from a two-digit number.Children will be able to relate addition and subtraction by using one operation to check the other. Children will solve two-question problems. They will select the operation to solve each question. Today's Lesson: Today's Homework: Science: Unit B Natural Resources Chapter 5- Earth's Land, Air and Water The students will recognize that the solid materials making up the Earth come in all sizes, from boulders to grains of sand. The student will learn that life occurs on or near the surface of the Earth in land, air and water. The student will understand that people influence the quality of life of those around them. The student will learn that the activities of humans affect plants and animals in many ways. And the students will understand that people use scientific processes including hypothesis, making inferences, and recording and communicating data when exploring the natural world. Today's Lesson: Lesson 1: What are natural resources? Today's Homework: Social Studies: Unit 3: History- Long Ago and Today Throughout this Unit the students will understand that there are many differences between life long ago and life today. They will also study different groups that settled in different areas and note that many Native Americans tried to be friendly to the settlers. The students will understand why settlers left England and identify important people such as King George, Paul Revere, and important documents such as the Declaration of Independence. We will study how the pioneers explored the wild frontier, sometimes pushing Native Americans off their land. We will also be studying about the struggle for freedom that many Americans faced in our countries history. Today's Lesson: Today's Homework: Religion/Guidance: Unit 2: Faith in God/ Chapter 3: God the Father Throughout this chapter, we will be examining the role of our parents and learning about how people care for God's children. We will also be talking about what a Saint is, with a focus on St. John Bosco, and how one becomes a Saint. The students will understand that God always answers our needs.
